Netgear’s Static IP Flaw with alternate DNS servers
I have 2 Netgear Nighthawk routers on my local lan. I do most of my development in containers that of.ten need ‘static DHCP IP addresses’. After wading through the firmware that Netgear puts out on their Open Source site I found the cause of my most annoying bug.
I use a Raspberry Pi 2 as an AdBlocker with Pi-Hole and an APT-cache for Linux updates. I set the Raspberry Pi as my DNS server within the router (192.168.1.1). When you attempt to add a device with a static IP to the ‘Address Reservation’ page it will throw an error:
“The IP address conflicts with the WAN IP subnet. Please enter a different IP address.“
To get around this error you must set your DNS service to the default setting which is to get them from your ISP. You can then make all changes to the “IP Address Reservation” table. Once your finished you can return to your prior settings.
